Which is why, as you notice, I only mooted it - by saying 'arguably'.

I guess it comes from working backwards from the result - had their been a large spoiled vote, following Richard Sinnott's figures, the Yes side could have achieved a comfortable majority with the spoiled vote indicative of the major problems of trying to sell the treaty to a referendum. However, I admit that I can't really see that inspiring the Government to do anything concrete about making people more informed - they'd be happy with the result and run with it.

I don't think someone, faced with a confusing issue, and genuinely afraid of the consequences of it going through, should be asked to spoil their vote; it would be undemocratic and immoral, by denying them political agency if not voice.

However - and perhaps this is because of the internet - I've seen too many people flippantly say 'no-one explained this to me' 'this long legal document is too complex' 'I don't trust any of my politicians' and consequently declare their No vote. Idealism v. cynicism, certainly; but I think our unique position in holding a referendum requires a bit more respect for the vote.gabbagabbaheyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07764368059568550318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-305962566578166600.post-68393835952990736002008-06-17T19:27:00.000+01:002008-06-17T19:27:00.000+01:00Gabba, I am not comfortable at all with the conten...Gabba, I am not comfortable at all with the contention, mooted here and elsewhere, that people should abstain/spoil if they do not understand what they are voting on.

On the other hand, anyone wishing to vote should make a sincere effort to inform themselves as best they can, i.e. with rights come responsibilities.

However, I know that this is the last little bit of the idealist in me speaking, as you could never enforce such a requirement on people!

In the end, as much as they gall me, I do not blame the "no" campaign for the result. Rather, it is the fault of even people like you or I for not painting a positive picture of Europe as a place of partnerships and prospects.

Fear was everywhere in this debate and fear won out in the end.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
